Candle Care

A few small rituals, for a candle that lasts.

A well-tended candle burns cleaner, throws scent further, and lasts longer. None of this is hard — it just asks for a minute of attention at the beginning and end of each burn.

Step 01

Trim the wick

Before every burn, trim the wick to a quarter inch. Long wicks smoke. Short wicks stay clean. Use a wick trimmer, scissors, or your fingertips — just keep it short and even.

Why it matters

Why it matters: a properly trimmed wick keeps the flame small, the melt pool even, and the room free of soot on the walls and ceiling.

Step 02

Take the first burn slowly

The first time you light your candle, let it burn long enough for the entire top layer of wax to liquefy — usually two to three hours for our 8 oz candles, three to four for the three-wick. This is called a memory burn.

Why it matters

If you blow it out before the top is fully melted, the candle will tunnel down the center for the rest of its life. Patience on the first burn buys you a long, even burn for the next forty.

Step 03

Know when to stop

Stop burning when a half inch of wax remains at the bottom. Burning past this point overheats the vessel, can damage surfaces, and wastes the fragrance.

Why it matters

Once the candle is finished, wash the vessel with warm soapy water and reuse it for a makeup brush, a small plant, or a desk catchall.

Storage

Store candles upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Heat and light can fade fragrance oils and warp the wax around the wick. If you’re storing for more than a month, keep the lid on or wrap the candle to preserve the scent.

Repurposing the vessel

Our glass and ceramic vessels are made to be reused. Once the wick is burned down and the remaining wax is set, pop the vessel in the freezer for an hour. The wax shrinks and lifts out cleanly. Wash with warm soapy water, and you have a small vase, a planter for succulents, or a brush holder.

Safety

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep candles away from drafts, open windows, ceiling fans, and curious pets. Burn on a level, heat-resistant surface, away from anything flammable. Keep wick trimmings and matches out of the wax. Stop use at a half inch of wax remaining.
